History
The John Joseph Moakley United States Courthouse was completed in 1998. This magnificent building is located on the Fan Pier waterfront site, overlooking historic Boston Harbor. It serves as the headquarters for the United States District Court for the District of Massachusetts, housing twenty-seven courtrooms in all. The building is named in honor of Congressman Moakley, a public servant and life-long South Boston resident.
Design
The Courthouse was designed by renowned architect, Henry Cobb, who’s work includes the John Hancock Tower in Boston, Massachusetts, Johnson & Johnson World Headquarters in New Brunswick, New Jersey, and the new headquarters for the International Monetary Fund in Washington, D.C. The waterside façade features an 88-foot-tall glass wall surrounding a 2.25-acre public park with dramatic views of the harbor and downtown Boston.
